Shotshells or cartridges may be lodged in the tubular magazine
Both the chamber and the magazine follower are inspected. A follower that cannot be seen may mean ammunition is still in the tube.

How do you check that a break-top long gun is unloaded?
Open the breech and visually and physically inspect the chamber and barrels
The breech is opened first. Then the chamber and barrel or barrels are inspected by sight and touch.

Remove the magazine
The magazine is removed first. Then the bolt is pulled back and locked open if possible, and the chamber is inspected.

The barrel and chamber, and also the internal magazine
Because the magazine cannot be removed, it is inspected together with the barrel and chamber.
