Frequently asked questions

Driver’s license knowledge test (Class C)

How many questions are on the California DMV written test?

The DMV does not publish the number. Drivers report 36 questions for adults and 46 for applicants under 18, which is what the practice exam here uses. Whatever the length, you need 80 percent correct to pass.

What score do you need to pass?

80 percent, per the DMV. Each question has three answer choices, and the practice exam here uses the same format and the same passing score.

How many times can you take the test?

Three times on one application, per the DMV. If you fail all three, you have to reapply and pay the fee again. Most people who practice until they pass the exam here several times in a row pass on the first try.

Motorcycle knowledge test (Class M)

Do I need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter in California?

It depends on the engine. The handbook puts motorized scooters and mopeds under specific classes: a moped with an engine of 50 cc or less needs a Class M2 license or above, and motorcycles need Class M1. The topic on mopeds and scooters here goes through the rules.

Is the motorcycle test in languages other than English?

The practice material on this site is in eight languages. The practice exam follows the language of the real test, and the page tells you when the real test is not offered in your language.

Is the motorcycle knowledge test hard?

Not if you have read the handbook: the questions are about riding technique and the rules, not trick wording. Go through Practice, then take the exam until you pass it three times in a row.

Commercial driver’s license (CDL) knowledge tests

Which CDL tests do I need?

Everyone takes the general knowledge test. After that it depends on what you will drive: air brakes for most trucks, combination vehicles for Class A, passenger for buses, school bus on top of passenger, tank for liquids, hazmat for hazardous loads, and doubles and triples for multiple trailers. Each test on this page is separate.

How many questions are on the CDL general knowledge test?

The practice exam here uses 50 questions and asks for 40 correct, 80 percent. The endorsement exams are shorter, 20 to 30 questions, at the same 80 percent.

Is the CDL test available in Spanish?

Yes. The questions on this site are in English and Spanish, and the practice exam is offered in both, matching the real test. The other languages here cover the study material, with the exam in English.

RV and trailer law test (noncommercial Class A and B)

Do I need a special license to drive an RV in California?

Most motorhomes up to 40 feet are covered by a regular Class C license. Motorhomes over 40 feet and up to 45 feet need a noncommercial Class B. Towing a trailer over 10,000 pounds, or a fifth-wheel over 15,000, needs a noncommercial Class A. The licensing topic here goes through the limits.

What is on the noncommercial Class A or B written test?

The law test covers the Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook: license classes, towing, weights, brakes, backing, and road rules for large vehicles. The questions on this page follow the handbook chapter by chapter.

Is the RV test offered in other languages?

The DMV publishes this handbook in English only, so the practice exam here is in English, like the real test. The study material on this site is translated into seven other languages.

Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) test

How many questions are on the FSC test and what is the passing score?

The DOJ requires 75 percent to pass. The practice exam here uses 30 questions and asks for 23 correct, which is the same bar.

How much does the FSC test cost and how long is the certificate valid?

The fee is $25, per the DOJ. The certificate is valid for five years.

Where do I take the FSC test?

At a licensed firearms dealer that has a DOJ-certified instructor. Most dealers that sell firearms offer it. Bring identification and the fee.
