What to expect on the test

The civics test is one part of the naturalization interview. A USCIS officer asks you questions out loud, up to 20 of them from a public list of 128, and you answer out loud. Twelve correct answers pass the test, and the officer stops asking once you have 12 right or 9 wrong. The test is in English, with one exception: applicants 65 and older who have been permanent residents for 20 years answer 10 questions from a special set of 20, in a language of their choice, and pass at 6.

The 128 questions and the answers USCIS accepts are quoted here as they are, from the official list (M-1778) for the 2025 version of the test, which applies to everyone who filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. Each explanation is written from the USCIS study guide “One Nation, One People” and links to it. Some answers change with elections and appointments: the names here are checked against the USCIS test updates page, and the date of the check is shown below. Three answers depend on your state: the site gives California’s and says where to find yours.

Study in four ways. Flashcards work like the interview: read the question, say the answer, then check it against the full list of answers USCIS accepts. Practice shows three choices and explains each answer. The exam follows the rules of the real test, with a separate 65/20 version. Mistakes brings back what you missed. Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the citizenship test and how many do I need to pass?

Up to 20 questions from the list of 128, asked out loud. You need 12 correct. The officer stops as soon as you reach 12 correct or 9 wrong, so the test can be as short as 12 questions. Applicants who filed before October 20, 2025 take the 2008 version instead: up to 10 questions from a list of 100, 6 correct to pass.

Is the civics test in English?

Yes. The questions are asked and answered in English, and the interview also checks that you can speak, read and write basic English. The exception is the 65/20 rule: if you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, you answer 10 questions from a set of 20 and may take the test in the language of your choice.

What happens if I fail the civics test?

You get a second chance. USCIS retests you on the part you failed, English or civics, between 60 and 90 days after the first interview.

Which version of the test do I take, 2008 or 2025?

It depends on the date you filed Form N-400. On or after October 20, 2025: the 2025 version with 128 questions, which is the one on this page. Before that date: the 2008 version with 100 questions.
