Yes, the knowledge test. The driving test is always in person, and so are the documents, the photo, the thumbprint and the vision screening, so an office visit is still part of getting the license. The DMV offers two online options, for different people.
The online knowledge exam
- For adults applying for a license, for applicants under 18, and for people moving to California with an out-of-state license. The option is offered after you complete the online application and pay the fee. Under 18, a parent or guardian gives consent.
- You need a computer or laptop with a webcam and internet. The test cannot be taken on a tablet or a phone.
- The exam is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, except state holidays. You verify your identity and are monitored for the whole exam.
- Two attempts online. If you fail both, the third attempt is at a DMV office.
- Offered in 35 languages.
eLearning, for renewals only
Drivers renewing a non-commercial Class C license who are asked to take a knowledge test can choose a no-fail course instead: seven short modules with a quiz after each, about 20 to 30 minutes, on any device, any time. It comes in English, Spanish and Traditional Chinese. It is not available for original applicants, for motorcycle renewals or for commercial licenses. Since October 2024, drivers 70 and older with a clean record do not take a knowledge test to renew at all.
Commercial licenses
CDL knowledge tests are taken at a DMV office. There is no online option for them.
The practice exam here runs in the same format as the real test: three answer choices, 80 percent to pass, a new set of questions each time. Pass it a few times in a row before you book the real one, online or in the office.
