The DMV does not publish the number of questions or a time limit for the Class C knowledge test. What it does state: the test is multiple choice with three answer choices per question, 80 percent correct passes, and you get three attempts on one application before you must reapply. Minors who fail wait seven days before the next attempt, not counting the day of the failure.
How many questions
The lengths reported by people who took the test are 36 questions for drivers 18 and over, with 30 correct to pass, and 46 questions for drivers under 18, with 38 correct. These are not official numbers. The practice exam on this site uses them because they are the ones most often reported, and 80 percent is the same either way.
How long it takes
There is no published time limit at the office. Taking the test online, the exam is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and is monitored through your webcam, so plan to sit through it in one go. Most of the time goes to reading: the questions are short, and if you know the handbook the test takes well under an hour.
What is not allowed
No testing aids of any kind during the test, the DMV names the handbook and a phone. That is why practising until the answers come without thinking is what works: the practice exam here has the same format, the same passing score and a new set of questions every time.
